Apple exports strong for Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year demand is helping apple shippers move a record crop, and shippers of other commodities also are enjoying strong holiday pull.
Howard Nager, vice president of marketing for Domex Superfresh Growers, Yakima, Wash., reported robust demand from China, Hong Kong and Vietnam for apples for Chinese New Year. The Year of the Sheep begins Feb. 19.
“We’ve had huge demand, as usual. We’ll ship for another week or so,” Nager said Jan. 14. Steve Lutz, vice president of marketing for Wenatchee, Wash.-based Columbia Marketing International LLC, agreed that Chinese New Year presents big opportunities for apple shippers. “It’s not that big of a deal in the U.S., but from an export standpoint, it’s huge.” Movement has been somewhat hampered, however, by port strikes on the West Coast, Nager said. “Things have been getting out, but slowly.”
In the future, the holiday could become even bigger for apple exporters if China opens the door even wider to U.S. product, Nager said. In October, China green-lighted red and golden delicious exports from the U.S. after a two-year ban. “We’re hopeful that China will approve other varieties in the next couple of months. There’s huge potential for that market. It’s virtually untapped.”
