June is when a production peak takes place for domestic cultivation of passion fruit in the United States. The specialty crop, which is grown in Florida, is expected to have volume similar to that from the previous year.
“Passion fruit is available sporadically year-round,” said Peter Leiferman of Brooks Tropicals. “We typically have two peaks in Florida, one in June and one in January. Production in June looks more like an even peak than a spiky peak, and with warm temperatures and moderate rain during the winter and spring, it looks like production will be smooth.”
Supplies of passion fruit are currently being imported from New Zealand, though Leiferman thinks those shipments will wind down over the course of the next month and a half. Demand has been good, but suppliers like Brooks Tropical are still wary of bringing in too much fruit.
“Passion fruit went through a learning curve. The market was oversupplied early in the product's life cycle, and has since adjusted to a better stasis where supply is not in excess of demand”, said Leiferman.
